Challenge

In a crowded global market, The House of Suntory faced a clear challenge: elevate Hibiki beyond whisky enthusiasts and establish it as a globally recognized symbol of luxury craftsmanship that transcends the category.

To succeed, the brand needed to drive awareness and desirability while redefining what Hibiki represents. It was not enough to be seen as a premium whisky. The ambition was to transform Hibiki into a true cultural authority within the global luxury lifestyle space.

The campaign aimed to:

  • Drive awareness and desirability of Hibiki in all priority brand markets: US, Australia, UK, Germany, Singapore.
  • Establish Hibiki whisky as a symbol of Japanese luxury and cultural refinement.
  • Align the brand with themes of artistry, hospitality, nature, and tradition as expressions of harmony.

The brand and its agency, Starcom Worldwide, partnered with Business Insider to co-develop a content-led platform to achieve these goals.

The campaign was born from a simple insight: today’s luxury consumers seek cultural meaning over status, a trend supported by Boston Consulting Group research showing 80% of luxury buyers value brands that engage with local culture. The strategy was to reposition Hibiki from product to cultural experience, immersing audiences in the Japanese ideals that define the brand.

To achieve this shift, The House of Suntory, Starcom Worldwide, and Business Insider’s content studio, Insider Studios, aligned on a strategy that focused on cultural immersion rather than traditional product storytelling — inviting audiences to experience the philosophies of Hibiki rather than simply learn about the whisky.

Inspired by the 24 facets of Hibiki’s bottle, the teams co-developed “24 Moments of Harmony,” a first-of-its-kind immersive interactive experience built around 24 cinematic moments. Each moment served as a window into Japanese craftsmanship and artistic precision, reinforcing Hibiki’s role as a curator of elevated experiences and cultural sophistication.

Content Solution

The creative goal was to position Hibiki as the embodiment of modern harmony — not only in its blend, but in how it reflects Japan’s deep respect for balance between nature, craftsmanship, and tradition. The challenge was translating that abstract idea into a tangible, emotionally resonant content experience.

The team identified three narrative anchors for the story: the landscape of Japan, Hibiki’s heritage, and the craft of blending. These shaped six chapters — Harmony, Nature, Artistry, Blending, Tradition, and Omotenashi — each serving as a natural touchpoint within the experience. Within them, moments were selected that embodied the interplay of innovation and tradition, from tea ceremonies to textiles, washi art to woodcarving, onsens to the convergence of three rivers.

To capture the original content that would populate the page, production spanned four days and 13 locations across Japan, with dual crews executing up to four shoots per day. Highlights included The Bar at the Ritz Carlton in Tokyo and the Light Cycles installation at Kyoto Botanical Garden. Interviews featured Fifth Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo and washi artist Eriko Horiki, who crafted the Hibiki bottle label.

Insider Studios worked in lockstep with Starcom Worldwide and The House of Suntory, from narrative development through production, ensuring the creative vision and cultural nuances were preserved at every stage.

The interactive build mirrored this commitment to craftsmanship. Designed with a horizontal scroll, the site invited users to explore at their own pace, gradually peeling back layers of the Hibiki story. Color, light, and sound became co-narrators. The palette drew from the 24 seasons of the Japanese calendar — soft purples of early autumn, golden hues of late summer, deep browns of aged wood. Light was natural and directional. Ambient soundscapes of flowing water, creaking oak, and rustling leaves brought nature’s rhythm into focus.

Each moment was designed to reward exploration, encouraging audiences to slow down, reflect, and discover how harmony shapes both Japanese culture and the Hibiki blend.

The result was a multisensory digital journey that expressed Hibiki’s depth, elegance, and artistry through cinematic storytelling, photography, video, audio, and illustration.

Media/Content Amplification Solution

Business Insider’s global audience of culturally curious professionals, combined with its ability to integrate storytelling and distribution, made it a strategic partner in both shaping and scaling the campaign.

“24 Moments of Harmony” was hosted as a dedicated microsite designed for immersion and time spent. To drive scale and qualified traffic, the campaign was supported by targeted native placements and high-impact media units across businessinsider.com, focused on Hibiki’s key markets: US, UK, Australia, Singapore, and Germany.

Native units were designed to draw audiences into the interactive, with separate creatives per chapter to encourage engagement with the full experience. Onsite media also leveraged campaign imagery to drive click-throughs to e-commerce destinations where users could purchase Hibiki. This ensured the campaign did not stop at inspiration but created a clear path toward consideration and purchase intent.

Three vertical social videos were cut from the interactive assets and distributed across Instagram and YouTube Shorts. These short-form pieces extended the campaign beyond the hub, capturing attention within platform-native environments and driving viewers back to the full experience.

The agency and publisher teams worked together to continuously optimize the experience based on user behavior. At launch, traffic was directed to multiple chapters via anchor-tagged messaging to encourage exploration across the experience. Post-launch metrics revealed that users who began at Chapter 1 engaged 2.5x more than those landing mid-experience. The strategy was adjusted to direct all traffic to the top of the page, resulting in increased time spent and a more cohesive journey.

Together, the paid media strategy, platform-native social distribution, and e-commerce pathways created a fully integrated ecosystem that maximized reach, engagement, and brand impact across priority markets.

Results

“24 Moments of Harmony” delivered exceptional performance across awareness, perception, engagement, and purchase intent.

Audiences spent an average of 5:01 minutes exploring the experience — 234% above BI’s benchmark — demonstrating deep engagement with the multisensory storytelling experience.

The campaign drove significant brand impact. A brand lift study showed a 2x increase in unaided brand recall and a 2.7x lift in very likely purchase intent, signalling measurable shifts in both awareness and consideration. These results directly aligned with the objective to elevate Hibiki’s profile and build desirability as a global luxury lifestyle brand.

Media delivery exceeded guarantees across channels. Pageviews surpassed projections by more than 9%, with two-thirds of traffic originating from key international markets — fulfilling the objective of driving reach in priority regions. Native units achieved a click-through rate 93% above benchmark. Video assets generated total views 6% above guarantees, with view completion rates exceeding platform benchmarks.

Optimization efforts further strengthened performance. Redirecting all traffic to begin at Chapter one increased engagement and overall time spent, reinforcing the power of a cohesive narrative journey.

The results demonstrate that the campaign successfully positioned Hibiki as a symbol of Japanese luxury and cultural refinement. It built awareness, shifted perception, and increased purchase intent, proving that immersive storytelling rooted in cultural authenticity can drive both emotional connection and measurable business impact.

Crucially, these results were driven by a deeply integrated partnership model, where brand, agency, and media owner worked as a unified team to align storytelling, distribution, and optimization.
