Challenge

As AI, automation and data-intensive services scaled at pace, the real battleground for innovation shifted to the “invisible” networks, data centres and systems that keep societies running. Business and policy leaders were under pressure to modernise infrastructure, improve resilience and meet global goals around wellbeing, security and sustainability, while public trust in technology remained fragile.

NTT wanted to move beyond being seen as a complex technology provider to be recognised as a human‑centred innovation partner—showing how its R&D, IOWN photonic networks and AI platforms deliver safer infrastructure, healthier cities and more inclusive digital access in practice.

Strategic Solution

The objective was to transition NTT’s market perception from a “telecoms and IT provider” to a trusted global leader in next-generation, sustainable infrastructure. The campaign aimed to drive favorability and consideration among C-suite decision-makers by proving that NTT designs systems for societal outcomes, not just technical efficiency.

We centered the strategy on “Human-Centered Innovation”, delivered through a multi-chapter editorial program covering:

  • Invisible Infrastructure: Photonic networks (IOWN) underpinning global finance and media.
  • Ethical AI: Applying NTT’s AI Charter to healthcare and mobility.
  • Sensory Connectivity: 6G and “FeelTech” pilots.
  • Sustainability: Liquid-cooled, renewable-powered facilities for the quantum era.

To gain credibility with policy-makers and the C-suite, NTT partnered with The Trust at The Wall Street Journal. This leveraged first-party subscriber intelligence to reach global CEOs in a trusted environment.

The strategy utilized a dual-track approach at flagship events like the WSJ Tech Live and CEO Council Summits. By pairing intimate, high-impact engagement with global content amplification, NTT converted single live touchpoints into “always-on” brand assets.

  • WSJ Tech Live: NTT hosted an exclusive lunch on AI Transformation by Design, convening 13 senior leaders for peer-level exchange. The session was filmed and distributed via Vimeo to extend reach.
  • CEO Council Summit: A high-visibility sponsor address was paired with a private breakfast panel, “AI for Growth,” for 27 senior attendees.

The strategic backbone was data‑driven:

  • WSJ Intelligence fielded a ten‑minute survey of 151 executive‑level leaders from $1bn+ revenue companies to benchmark familiarity, favourability and likelihood to partner with NTT before and after exposure to the programme.
  • A WSJ Intelligence‑backed whitepaper and quiz experience translated these insights into an accessible “future framework” for human‑centred infrastructure, ensuring the content responded to audience needs.

In combination, the strategy fused NTT’s R&D and AI leadership with WSJ’s editorial rigour and audience data – creating a high‑authority platform capable of shifting perceptions.

Content Solution

Human Centered Innovation was built as a cohesive content universe rather than a single asset – blending long‑form storytelling, film, interactive experiences and a research‑driven whitepaper, all grounded in real deployments rather than speculative futures.

At its core sat five custom long‑scroll features and a long‑form video, each tying advanced technology back to clear human stakes:

  • The Photonics Revolution: Powering the Future of AI and Infrastructure explored how NTT’s IOWN photonic networks make critical services – from live broadcasting to remote industrial inspections and financial uptime – more resilient, efficient and accessible, shifting the focus from purely bandwidth to human outcomes.
  • Engineering Ethics: Building AI Systems Worth Trusting showed NTT’s AI Charter in practice through case studies such as Toyota’s mobility AI platform, national‑scale radiology projects and mental‑health screening tools – making “trust by design” tangible for leaders.
  • The Human Internet: Rebuilding Connection Through Technology introduced NTT DOCOMO’s FeelTech pilots and 6G‑enabled sensory internet, reframing connectivity as presence, empathy and inclusion rather than pure speed.
  • Intelligence at Scale: Turning Data into Public Safety spotlighted projects such as disaster‑response platforms and Earth‑observation initiatives, positioning AI and digital twins as tools for public preparedness rather than surveillance.
  • Sustainable by Design: Rethinking Infrastructure in the Quantum Era brought to life NTT’s blueprint for energy‑light quantum‑ready infrastructure – liquid‑cooled data centres, renewables‑powered GPU workloads and modular edge facilities.

A 15-18‑minute fireside‑chat film, shot in London with senior NTT leadership and WSJ Custom Content Global Head of Studio and veteran anchor Phillipa Leighton‑Jones, extended the narrative into a more intimate format. It linked strategic responsibility, ethics and innovation in a human, conversational format, supported by a 15‑second trailer and multilingual SRTs for global accessibility.

Visually, the series used a distinctive illustration system that fused humanity, nature and technology: NTT’s brand blues and greens, layered compositions and subtle network motifs signalled advanced infrastructure without overwhelming human figures or natural environments. Technology is ever‑present but never dominant, mirroring the campaign’s ethos.

Finally, an interactive quiz‑led whitepaper hub, backed by WSJ Intelligence, invited leaders to explore their own innovation values and receive a personalized “future framework” journey. Each pathway curated relevant NTT breakthroughs, WSJ insights and expert perspectives, culminating in a downloadable playbook on building human‑centred infrastructure and ethical AI systems.

Together, these elements created an always‑on, multi‑format content destination that felt both editorially premium and unmistakably NTT.

Media/Content Amplification Solution

To reach senior technology and business decision‑makers at scale, NTT invested in a fully paid, multi‑channel distribution strategy centred on the Dow Jones ecosystem and extended through premium syndication and social.

Within WSJ | Barron’s Group, the campaign ran across:

  • WSJ.com native and run‑of‑network placements, delivering over 16.9 million impressions with an average CTR of 0.21% – 2.1x the WSJ benchmark – demonstrating sustained responsiveness to NTT’s messaging.
  • Apple News as a consistent high‑performing driver of traffic and engagement across flights, aligning the content with mobile‑first news consumption habits.
  • Section‑aligned placements in relevant business, technology and innovation environments, ensuring contextual relevance while reinforcing NTT’s authority among readers already focused on AI, infrastructure and risk.
  • High‑impact and video pre‑roll formats, using 1280×720 assets around the hero film to elevate Human Centered Innovation as a marquee thought‑leadership franchise rather than a standard native unit.

This was complemented by a substantial Outbrain syndication plan: a US$50,000 amplification budget guaranteed 930,000 pageviews and 499,000 video views, targeted to C‑suite, senior business and technology decision‑makers across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Singapore and Japan.

Each content asset was supported by:

  • Content Integration Units and native banners, visually matched to WSJ’s editorial environment to drive qualified, in‑context traffic to the Human Centered Innovation hub.
  • Platform‑native social creative, including short‑form cut‑downs and static units optimised for LinkedIn’s professional audience, extending reach among enterprise technology and policy stakeholders. Distribution copy and assets were tailored per article and housed in dedicated syndication documents to enable ongoing optimisation.

Targeting combined first‑party subscriber intelligence – to identify global innovation leaders, technology decision‑makers and senior executives – with contextual signals around AI, infrastructure, cybersecurity and digital transformation, we ensured that every exposure occurred in a premium, brand‑safe environment where audiences expect deep, analytical content.

Crucially, media performance insights fed back into the programme over time. As the campaign progressed, WSJ Run of Network emerged as the top‑performing placement while quiz and later‑phase articles achieved CTRs up to 0.27%, allowing investment to be concentrated in the highest‑impact channels without sacrificing global coverage.
