Social Good

In tandem, our approach reflected a broader understanding that younger audiences engage more deeply with authenticity, participation, and representation than with top-down communications. The campaign’s co-creation model (where contributors partnered with Vox Media on shaping how their stories were told) ensured the work felt credible, respectful, and emotionally resonant. In doing so, the EC aligned its communications strategy with its wider development values: partnership, empowerment, and long-term social impact.
Ultimately, the social good strategy was not only about raising awareness of EC initiatives, but about building trust and fostering a stronger emotional connection between young people and the idea of a shared global future.
Content Solution
The creative approach behind our campaign – Global Gateway: Of the Future – was built around a simple but powerful idea: if the European Commission wanted young audiences to rethink the EU’s role in their communities, the stories needed to feel human first, institutional second. Rather than relying on traditional development messaging, the campaign used cinematic, participant-led storytelling to make the EC’s Global Gateway initiatives tangible, relatable, and emotionally resonant.
Vox Creative developed a three-part documentary series across Bangladesh, El Salvador, and South Africa, each centred on a young changemaker already driving progress within their community. The creative process was intentionally collaborative. Contributors shaped how their stories were told (influencing themes, locations, tone, and the personal details included) creating an approach that prioritised authenticity, agency, and trust. This ensured the films reflected lived experience rather than imposed narratives, helping audiences connect more deeply with both the individuals and the broader mission behind the work.
Visually, the films combined documentary realism with cinematic craft. Natural light, observational footage, and real-world environments created an intimate and contemporary aesthetic that felt credible to younger viewers. Each film also reflected the texture and priorities of its region: green jobs and climate innovation in South Africa, digital inclusion in El Salvador, and female entrepreneurship in Bangladesh. Subtitles in local languages and English ensured accessibility and expanded reach across markets.
Innovation also came through format and distribution. Long-form documentaries created emotional depth and narrative credibility, while short-form edits, social-first cuts (with optimised colour, graphics and animation packages) and platform-native storytelling extended engagement across Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Vox.com through a highly targeted distribution approach.
The storytelling was designed to move fluidly between campaign environments and cultural spaces, culminating in one film screening at the Johannesburg Film Festival and contributing to national recognition for its featured changemaker.
The result was a content solution that felt authentic to both the EC’s values and the realities of the communities represented helping blend editorial integrity, cinematic storytelling, and multi-platform innovation to drive awareness, engagement, and meaningful perception shift.
Media/Content Amplification Solution
The campaign used a multi-platform paid media strategy designed to maximise reach, reinforce message recall, and engage young audiences across the channels they use most. Recognising that 18–35-year-olds consume content fluidly across formats and devices, the approach combined premium editorial environments, social amplification, and targeted paid distribution to create repeated exposure and sustained engagement.
At the centre of the campaign were three documentary films hosted on Vox.com, where long-form editorial storytelling provided depth, context, and credibility. To drive audiences toward this content, Vox Creative developed a layered paid media strategy that combined high-impact video placements, social-first distribution, and audience targeting powered by Forte, Vox Media’s first-party data platform.
Paid video units across Vox Media properties prioritised visibility and engagement, using immersive placements designed to capture attention without disrupting the viewing experience. These units delivered a 0.23% click-through rate — nearly five times the Vox benchmark — demonstrating strong audience interest and intent to engage further with the stories.
Social platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube were used to extend reach through short-form cuts, trailers, and Reels optimised for mobile viewing and platform-native behaviour. The creative was tailored for each channel, using fast-paced edits, emotionally resonant moments, platform resonant colour and graphics packages and subtitles to encourage completion and sharing. This strategy proved highly effective, with Reels achieving a 12.13% video completion rate, more than double the benchmark of 5.15%.
Audience targeting focused specifically on 18–35-year-olds in Bangladesh, El Salvador, and South Africa, ensuring the stories reached communities most relevant to the campaign objectives. Paid distribution was complemented by cultural amplification opportunities, including a screening at the Johannesburg Film Festival, which helped extend the campaign beyond traditional media environments and into influential cultural spaces.
By combining cinematic storytelling with a precision-led paid media strategy, the campaign successfully transformed complex institutional messaging into content audiences actively chose to watch, engage with, and share, driving both awareness of the EC’s Global Gateway strategy and stronger emotional connection with the EC’s role in local communities.
Results
The campaign delivered strong results across awareness, engagement, and perception directly supporting the European Commission’s objective of repositioning the EU as a relevant, invested partner in young people’s futures rather than a distant institution.
From a media performance perspective, the campaign significantly exceeded benchmarks across key metrics. High-impact video placements achieved nearly five times the Vox benchmark for the format, demonstrating exceptional audience interest and engagement with the content. Short-form social video also overperformed, with Instagram Reels achieving more than double the Vox Media benchmark — indicating that audiences were not only stopping to watch, but staying engaged through the stories and messaging.
Beyond media metrics, the campaign generated meaningful cultural and qualitative impact. One of the films screened at the Johannesburg Film Festival, extending the campaign into a respected cultural space and elevating the visibility of both the featured changemaker and the EC’s role in supporting opportunity and innovation. The South African participant was also later recognised as one of the Mail & Guardian Top 200 Young South Africans in the Climate Change & Environment category, with the participant describing the documentary as “a beacon of hope… proving that our dreams are valid.”
Audience response across social platforms further reinforced the campaign’s success. Comments reflected surprise, appreciation, and increased awareness of the EC’s involvement in local progress, providing qualitative evidence that the campaign helped shift perceptions and deepen understanding of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy.
Together, the results demonstrated that authentic, participant-led storytelling paired with a targeted paid media strategy can drive both measurable engagement and meaningful attitudinal impact successfully achieving the campaign’s objectives of awareness, relevance, and positive perception shift.
