Challenge

As Saudi Arabia opens to global tourism, perception has been driven largely by scale, infrastructure, and spectacle rather than cultural depth. For the Saudi Tourism Authority, attracting affluent travellers required more than promoting destinations. The brand needed emotional relevance and cultural credibility.

Aseer presented a unique opportunity: a region rich in heritage, community, and living traditions, yet largely unknown internationally. Simultaneously, Bloomberg Media Studios saw an opportunity to evolve from distributor to strategic storytelling partner, demonstrating the power of long-form, driven content. Together, the challenge became creating a narrative that shifted perception, deepened engagement, and delivered value for both organisations.

Strategic Solution

Proprietary Bloomberg audience research revealed a clear behavioural shift among affluent global travellers. 87% are seeking new destinations, 73% prioritise immersive cultural experiences, and 84% are willing to pay more for authenticity and quality.

These audiences are increasingly driven by meaning, connection, and intentional experiences rather than status or novelty. However, traditional tourism storytelling continues to position the traveller as an outsider encountering culture for the first time.

This created a disconnect between what audiences want and how destinations are presented.

The insight was that authenticity cannot be observed, it must be experienced. To resonate emotionally, storytelling needed to shift from spectacle to participation, and from external observation to internal perspective.

This insight also aligned both partners strategically. STA needed cultural credibility. Bloomberg needed to demonstrate the effectiveness of deeper, more immersive storytelling formats.

Content Solution

The partnership evolved from a previous campaign, The Most Amazing, which focused on short-form highlights, into a more ambitious, co-created storytelling model.

At the heart of the strategy was a simple idea: the most meaningful way to understand a place is through the people who live it every day.

Rather than presenting Aseer as a destination to discover, we told the story from within. The campaign followed a young creative returning to her roots, allowing culture to unfold through lived experience.

This demanded a shift in both creative and partnership approach.

The collaboration moved beyond a traditional client-agency relationship into true co-creation. STA provided cultural expertise, access, and community integration, while Bloomberg contributed audience intelligence, editorial storytelling, and premium distribution.

Authenticity shaped every stage of production. The film captured unscripted interactions, local traditions, and everyday rituals — from Al Qatt Al Asiri art to communal food gatherings — as part of lived culture rather than staged tourism experiences. In doing so, the campaign offered a more nuanced perspective on the region and challenged stereotypical portrayals often associated with travel marketing.

Several bold decisions challenged category conventions.

First, we prioritized long-form storytelling. A 120-second film carried inherent risk in a landscape dominated by short-form content and declining attention spans.

Second, we rejected polished tourism advertising tropes, choosing authenticity over control and embracing the unpredictability that came with it.

Third, we shifted the perspective from external discovery to internal experience, trusting audiences to engage with a slower, more reflective narrative.

Finally, the partnership itself was redefined. Moving from a delivery model to co-creation required alignment, trust, and shared ownership across strategy and execution.

These decisions increased risk, but were essential to achieving authenticity and differentiation.

The campaign was executed across a multi-platform ecosystem. Long-form film drove emotional engagement, on-site placements maximized completion, social extended reach, and TV reinforced credibility among senior decision-makers — demonstrating that emotionally driven, culturally grounded storytelling can deliver both audience impact and commercial value.

Media/Content Amplification Solution

The amplification strategy for Living Tradition was designed to mirror the depth and intentionality of the storytelling itself. Rather than relying on broad awareness tactics or high-volume destination advertising, the campaign focused on engaging affluent, globally minded audiences in premium editorial environments where long-form, culturally rich storytelling could command attention, credibility, and emotional resonance.

Bloomberg Media was selected as the lead partner because of its unique ability to reach the audiences most valuable to Visit Saudi: senior decision-makers, high-net-worth travellers, globally mobile professionals, and culturally curious readers who actively shape travel perception and intent. Bloomberg’s trusted editorial voice and premium ecosystem allowed the campaign to sit naturally alongside culture, travel, luxury, and business content, ensuring the storytelling felt native rather than promotional.

The media strategy was executed as a coordinated multi-platform ecosystem spanning Bloomberg.com, Bloomberg Pursuits, Bloomberg Originals, social channels, newsletters, and Bloomberg TV. High-impact paid placements including Bloomberg Video Everywhere, in-article video units, and custom StoryCards were prioritized to maximize quality of engagement rather than passive reach. Native social amplification across Instagram and YouTube extended the campaign into visually led environments suited to cinematic storytelling, while Bloomberg TV reinforced credibility among influential global business audiences.

Audience targeting focused on priority markets including the UK, France, Germany, North America, and key international business hubs. Distribution was strategically weighted toward formats proven to hold attention, particularly premium in-stream video placements and long-form storytelling environments. The campaign deliberately prioritized completion rate, time spent, and meaningful interaction over simple impressions, reflecting the broader strategic objective of moving audiences from awareness toward active consideration.

By aligning premium media placement with audience insight and emotionally authentic storytelling, the campaign transformed attention into meaningful connection, positioning Aseer as a culturally credible destination rather than simply a tourism product.

Results

The campaign established Aseer as a culturally rich destination for affluent travellers through character-led storytelling. By moving beyond traditional tourism spectacle, the work created a deep emotional connection with Bloomberg’s audience, who crave authentic, “un-crowded” experiences.

Impact was reflected in exceptional performance: 4.9 million total impacts and 2.4 million video views, exceeding the primary KPI by 10%. Engagement was remarkably strong, with a 69% overall video completion rate, rising to 93% on Bloomberg’s site. Notably, the 120-second film exceeded CTR benchmarks by over 420%, proving an appetite for long-form content when it is culturally grounded.

Social platforms drove high engagement, while TV amplification ensured elite reach, penetrating 27.68% of the UK C-suite and 24.13% in Europe. These results confirm that an emotionally authentic approach – rooted in the insight that modern travellers seek “lived” experiences – resonated deeply with a highly influential global audience.
